Harrison Medical Center is moving its flagship campus from Bremerton to Silverdale, where Harrison already maintains a network of facilities, the Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal reports.

A 400,000-square-foot, 240-bed hospital will be constructed in Silverdale at an estimated cost of $240 million. The project will be funded in part by the Tacoma-based Franciscan Health System, which Harrison affiliated with in August 2013.

The new hospital will be located at Myhre Road and Ridgetop Boulevard on a 32-acre property that is currently home to a 24-hour emergency department, a natal care unit, and an orthopedic hospital. Also being considered are a new medical center and cancer center.

Harrison CEO Scott Bosch cited the age of the Bremerton hospital – built in 1965 – and rising costs as the driving forces behind the campus consolidation in Silverdale. Many services are currently duplicated on the Bremerton and Silverdale campuses, and overhaul of the Bremerton hospital could cost $130 million.

The new hospital won’t be significantly larger but will be more efficiently designed, Bosch told the Business Journal. Other benefits of the Silverdale campus are a central location, easy access, and room to grow, he added.

Bob Guardino, a local commercial broker, described Silverdale as “becoming a medical mecca.” The updated Harrison site will join a growing health cluster in Silverdale that includes the Doctors Clinic, Group Health, and a number of smaller practices.
